Lugala Restoration Project

Restoring degraded land in Lugala through planting native tree species, sustainable farming, and community action for climate resilience and biodiversity recovery.

In a powerful partnership, My Birthday Tree Organization (MBTO) and APOPO HeroTREEs have launched a groundbreaking restoration initiative across 153 acres of land generously allocated by Sokoine University of Agriculture (SUA). This visionary project is reviving degraded landscapes through  planting of diverse native tree species and the promotion of sustainable, climate-smart farming practices.

At its core, the project features innovative syntropic agroforestry demonstration plots—vibrant, living learning space where SUA students gain practical experience in ecosystem restoration and sustainable land use. These plots serve not only as learning spaces but as catalysts for a new generation of environmental stewards.

Beyond the university, the impact extends to local farming communities through ongoing training in regenerative agriculture techniques. These hands-on sessions help farmers improve soil health, increase crop yields, and enhance climate resilience—while protecting the environment for future generations.

What began as a reforestation effort has evolved into a model of sustainable land management, bridging academic research with grassroots action and inspiring a greener, more resilient Tanzania.
